WMATA Service Disruption and Campus Parking

We understand that WMATA delays can be frustrating, and we wanted to provide you with information about alternative transportation options if you are coming to AU’s campus.

If you choose to drive to campus, all AU community members can use the “Virtual Self-Park Code” option for discounted parking rates. To access the discount code, go to the Parking Portal and select Affiliated Login and log in using your AU credentials. Click the Get Permits button and select the "Virtual Self Park Code" option to register your vehicle, obtain the discount code, and get instructions for use. Logins using a guest account do not have access to this parking option.

  • The location code offers a discounted $0.75/hour rate (plus $0.35 service fee) through the PayByPhone mobile application to park in all general parking areas on campus, as well as the garages at the Spring Valley Building, 4401 Connecticut Ave and 3201 New Mexico Ave (a separate authorization is required for the 4401 and 3201 locations).

As a reminder, in accordance with Washington, DC regulations and the University’s “Good Neighbor Policy,” all guests, students, faculty, and staff driving to campus are required to park in a designated parking garage with the appropriate parking pass or self-park code. Parking is prohibited on all neighborhood streets while visiting any university property. Abiding by this policy is a condition of enrollment and employment with American University.

For additional information on parking at AU, please visit the website or contact the Office of Parking & Commuter Services at As always, please adhere to posted signs indicating reserved spaces or other potential parking restrictions. Updates on WMATA services are available on their website.
