Professional Development Opportunities

Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Fund

American University has established a Professional Development Fund for adjunct faculty to provide support for professional development opportunities related to teaching. An adjunct faculty member may apply for support, and if the application is approved, the faculty member may be reimbursed up to $650 in an academic year for verified expenditures related to the approved professional development opportunity. The Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Fund Application Form should be completed and submitted to your department chair, program director, or teaching unit administrator. If your application is approved, you will be required to submit a brief (one page) report on the activity undertaken along with receipts for expenditures in order to be reimbursed. Please use the AU Employee Travel and Expense Reimbursement Form, which can be accessed upon signing into the AU Portal, when submitting your report.

Center for Teaching, Research and Learning (CTRL)

CTRL offers grant opportunities for curricular enhancement, for which adjunct faculty are eligible to apply. CTRL also coordinates an annual Teaching with Research award and a Teaching with Technology award, for which adjunct faculty may be nominated. Click here for details on these CTRL programs.

Office of Sponsored Programs

The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) provides a supportive, proactive, and dynamic environment for conducting externally funded research projects and sponsored programs. All AU faculty, including adjunct faculty, are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators, with the support of their school or college dean and the Vice Provost for Research.
