As noted in the October 2, 2026 announcement, "Important Update Regarding Frequency Apartments," Housing & Residence Life is happy to provide the below answers to commonly asked questions regarding the decision to not renew the lease for the Frequency Apartments after the 2026-2027 academic year.
What is changing?
American University will not renew its lease for the Frequency Apartments after the 2026-2027 academic year. The Frequency will remain an AU housing option through August 14, 2027. AU is focusing its housing investment on the on-campus residential experience and facilities it operates directly.
Will the Frequency remain open during the 2026-2027 academic year?
Yes. The Frequency will continue to operate as an AU housing option throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. Current residents are not being asked to move as a result of this announcement.
Why is AU making this change?
AU is concentrating its housing investment on improving the on-campus residential experience. That includes work on furnishings and room configurations in existing facilities and stronger options for upper-division, graduate, and law students.
Will AU still have enough housing for students?
AU will share available housing options, eligibility, and selection information for 2027-2028 before applications open. Students with questions about their individual options can contact Housing & Residence Life at that time.
Does this mean AU is reducing its investment in student housing?
No, AU is focusing investment on the residential facilities it operates directly, including improvements to furnishings and room configurations. The university is also exploring options that better serve upper-division, graduate, and law students.
What housing options will be available for students who might have otherwise selected the Frequency?
AU will continue to provide a variety of housing options for upper-division students. Information regarding available room types, eligibility requirements, and housing selection processes for the 2027-2028 academic year will be shared through the university's regular housing communications.
Will there continue to be housing options designed for upper-division students?
Yes. AU is exploring room configurations, furnishings, and other improvements to meet the needs of upper-division students. Details about specific options will be shared as plans are finalized.
When will students receive information about housing options for 2027-2028?
Students will receive information of the 2027-28 housing application and selection process. Future updates will be communicated through the university's regular housing communications and housing website.
Will current Frequency residents receive services and support during the transition?
Yes. Students will continue to receive all current housing and residence life services and support throughout the transition.
Will housing rates change because of this decision?
Housing rates for future academic years are reviewed and approved through the university's normal budgeting and rate-setting processes. Information about 2027-2028 housing rates will be shared when available.
What improvements are being considered for on-campus housing?
The university is exploring enhancements that may include upgraded furnishings, additional room configurations, improvements to selected residence halls, and offerings tailored to the needs of upper-division, graduate, and law students.
What if I was planning to live at the Frequency in 2027-2028?
The Frequency will not be an AU housing option in 2027-2028. Housing & Residence Life will share available university housing choices and selection details before applications open.
