Welcome to CCES

The Center for Community Engagement and Service (CCES) is AU’s hub for community outreach, volunteering and service-learning opportunities in Washington, DC and beyond. Being part of the DC community is an important part of the student experience at AU, and CCES is where students come to connect.

You can tutor DC students with DC Reads. Earn class credit with volunteer work through the Community Service-Learning Program (CSLP). Participate in or lead a domestic or global service experience through the Alternative Breaks Program. You can even turn your passion into a project with an Eagle Endowment.

Explore DC

Explore DC (EDC) is back during 2023 All-American Welcome! Held from August 21-23, EDC is a multi-day experience that includes service with nonprofits, exploration of neighborhoods, DC history and culture and evening programming for incoming first-year and transfer student. Sponsored by CCES, it's a traditional part of AU's All=American Welcome. EDC gives new students a chance to acclimate to their new home through logistical issues like transportation and food, and to learn about how the city works by exploring the burning issues faced by community members, and to be exposed to some of the cultural and historical resources that exist.

Join us for Read Your World Day 2024!

Read Your World Day is for AU community members (faculty, staff, undergraduate, and post-graduate students) to gather together to celebrate education and literacy in the D.C. community! Our office is partnering with non-profits and public schools in the city to host a read-aloud for elementary-aged students.

The focus for this event is multicultural literature because our office believes that it is important for ALL students to see themselves represented as the main character in a book. Volunteers will attend classrooms in small groups to read an engage with the students and share the importance of education.
