Disability Studies Launch Event: "Why Disability Studies Now?"

November 19, 2026, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
MGSC 305/306 (and on Zoom)

Roundtable participants: Julie Avril Minich (University of Texas, Austin), Nirmala Erevelles (University of Alabama), La Marr Jurelle Bruce (University of Maryland), Antonio Ellis (American University), Toby Aho (moderator, American University)

To celebrate the launch of AU's newest minor in Disability Studies, we invite our campus and DMV community to join us for a conversation about the importance of Disability Studies in this particular moment. The roundtable discussion will feature four disability studies scholars whose intersectional work together addresses the importance of considering questions of disability, debility, and access to navigate our contemporary realities: Nirmala Erevelles (University of Alabama), Julie Avril Minich (University of Texas, Austin), La Marr Jurelle Bruce (University of Maryland), and Antonio Ellis (American University). The discussion will be moderated by Toby Aho (American University).

All student attendees are invited to participate in a book raffle; we will be raffling four books by each speaker.

Please register for the launch event in advance so that we can learn about attendees' access needs. A Zoom option and recording will be provided to all registered attendees.

We encourage all attendees to wear masks. ASL interpretation will be provided, and an access guide will be available closer to the event date. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns to Dr Toby Aho ([email protected]).
