Become a Tutor

There are five easy steps to becoming a tutor!

STEP ONE: Complete a DC Reads application online.

  • The application is located on our EngageNet portal! Go to myau.american.edu → Life @ AU → EngageNet to apply.
  • Fill out the interest profile and new student application.

STEP TWO: Submit negative TB test results to the Center for Community Engagement and Service. Some sites also require tutors to submit a DC Public Schools background check.

  • TB tests are available at the Health Center on campus. You can register online for an appointment via the Health Portal.
  • Tutors will be notified at their interview if they require a background check.

STEP THREE: Sign up for an interview with a DC Reads staff member by calling (202) 885-7311.

  • At the end of the interview we will place you at a site according to your preferences.

STEP FOUR: Federal Work Study only - Complete hiring paperwork with DC Reads office staff.

  • Tax forms
  • Direct Deposit
STEP FIVE: Attend a DC Reads Training.
  • Training will be held from 9am-4pm (for FWS) and 10am-4pm (for volunteers).

Once you have completed the above five steps you are able to begin tutoring at your designated site!
