Accommodated Testing Resources for Main Campus Students

If you are approved for testing accommodations, the Office of Student Disability Support (OSDS) will work with your instructors to administer your exams and quizzes in the Accommodated Testing Office. It is important that you schedule all exam and quiz requests through your Disability Support Dashboard at least 5 days in advance.

Scheduling a Test with the OSDS

All exams and quizzes must be scheduled through your Disability Support Dashboard at least 5 days in advance. No late requests will be accepted. All exams must be scheduled during the Accommodated Testing Office’s hours, which are 9 AM- 5 PM, Monday-Friday.

We recommend scheduling all exams and quizzes after you receive your syllabi at the beginning of each semester. For help with scheduling, meet with your Disability Access Advisor (DAA). You may also contact the Accommodated Testing team over email, [email protected] , phone, 202-885-3489, or in person, Butler Pavilion 300.

Scheduling Conflicts

All exams should be scheduled for the same date and that your class is taking the exam. If conflicts with other classes require a different testing time, you are responsible for communicating that change to your instructor. The following list outlines common scheduling conflicts and how to manage them.

  • If the total duration of your exam, including approved extended time, overlaps with another scheduled class, either schedule your exam for earlier in the day or after your other class. The Office of Student Disability Support does not provide excused absences for classes missed because of an exam. You should attempt to take the exam as close as possible to the original time of the exam.

  • If your exam is originally scheduled for a time when our office is closed, work with your instructor to determine if you should take the exam earlier in the day or the following day.

  • If it is not possible to fit your exam, including approved extended time, into your schedule on the original exam date due to conflicts with other classes, work with your instructor to determine if you should take the exam the day before or after. If you schedule your exam for a different date than the rest of the class, confirm that you have discussed the alternate testing date with your instructor either by emailing [email protected] and copying your instructor or by adding a note to your exam request on your dashboard.

  • Do not schedule an exam for a different time for non-academic conflicts. You are expected to schedule work, extracurricular, and recreational activities around your exam schedule.

For help with scheduling conflict related questions, contact The Accommodated Testing Team by emailing, [email protected], calling, 202-885-3489, or visiting the office in Butler Pavilion 300.

Viewing Upcoming Tests

All scheduled exams appear on your Disability Support Dashboard. You will also receive a confirmation email for all successfully scheduled exams. We encourage you to confirm that every exam you plan to take with the OSDS appears on your dashboard and has a corresponding confirmation email.

What to Expect the Day of Your Exam

All accommodated exams are provided through the Accommodated Testing team in the Office of Student Disability Support, located in Butler Pavilion 300 (one floor directly above the Bridge Cafe). If you need help finding our office, call 202-885-3489. Please arrive at the Accommodated Testing Office at least 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

What to bring with you:

  • Your AUID card

  • If your exam is on paper, a pen or pencil

  • If you are typing your answers or your exam is online, your fully charged and updated computer

  • Any other materials your instructor allows for the exam (calculator, notes, etc.) If you do not know what materials are allowed, check with your instructor.

When you arrive at the Accommodated Testing Office, one of our staff members will ask you for your AUID card and check you in for the exam. They will make sure you have everything you need before you begin testing.

If your exam is on paper, you will store everything you do not need in a locker. If you are typing your answers, we will ask you to open a blank Word Document, close all other programs and browser tabs, and turn off your Wi-Fi. If your exam is online, we will ask you to close all other tabs and confirm your allotted testing time is correct. You will then receive a seat assignment card showing your assigned seat and your testing end time.

During your exam, you will typically be monitored by a proctor via live video, supplemented by regular in-person checks of the testing room. At certain times, such as during finals week, a proctor may monitor the testing room in person throughout the exam. If we observe behavior that may violate academic integrity expectations, we will notify your instructor.

When you finish your exam, you will check out with the Accommodated Testing Office. A staff member will give you any instructions for submitting or delivering your exam.

To keep the office and testing experience running smoothly, the Accommodated Testing Team cannot accept late exam requests. You may try one of the following options. Note that your professor is not required to agree to either of these options:

  • Contact your professor, copying [email protected], to see if they will permit you to take the exam on a different day.

  • Contact your professor to see if they can provide your accommodations for this exam.

No. If your exam is a take-home exam and you have an extended time accommodation, contact your instructor at least one week in advance to request use your accommodation. Your instructor will then update your testing time. The Accommodated Testing team can assist if needed.

No. Only technology required for your exam or used as a medical device may be kept with you during testing. All other technology should be stored in a locker.

You may bring any beverage that has a sealed lid. If you need food during your exam, store it in your locker and eat outside the testing room. If you have an accommodation that allows food or drink and are concerned about storing these items in a locker, please talk to the Accommodated Testing Team to discuss available options.

Yes, you may use the restrooms in our office during the exam. You must leave all materials in the testing room when you leave, and you may not access any unpermitted materials during your restroom break.

If you have a question for your professor, come to the Accommodated Testing Office and we will contact them for you.

No. If you arrive late for an exam, you will usually lose any time you missed. In rare situations outside your control, we may contact your instructor to see whether any of the missed time can be made up. Depending on your instructor’s policies, we may also need their permission before allowing you to begin the exam if you arrive late.

You are responsible for bringing a working laptop to your exam. If your device has technical problems, we cannot guarantee that a loaner laptop will be available or that an available device will meet the technical requirements of your exam.
