  • Language
    Students are expected to be able to develop a functional knowledge of the language and grammar of music
  • Common Elements
    Students are expected to be able to develop an understanding of the common elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, texture and form) in their interaction through both visual and aural analysis
  • Sight Reading
    Students are expected to develop fluency in sight reading including the ability to hear, identify, conduct and relate simple (diatonic), chromatic and model musical materials
  • Composition
    Students are expected to be able to develop an understanding of musical form, process and structures of composition
  • Major Styles
    Students are expected to be able to acquire a general knowledge of the major style, genres, forms and composers from the Middle Ages to the present
  • Social Context
    Students are expected to be able to develop the ability to place compositions and stylistic perspective as well as to discuss works in the social context from when they were created
  • Performance Practice
    Students are expected to be able to apply a basic knowledge of music performance practices and stylistic traits within the context of their own instrument
