Summer Housing

Eligibility

Summer housing is available to current American University students who are enrolled in summer classes, participating in a summer internship, or staying in D.C. with plans to return to AU during the fall semester.

Housing for non-American University students interning in D.C. for the summer is offered through University Conference & Guest Services. Please visit the Intern & Guest Housing page for more information.

Housing Options

Due to heavy construction on campus during the 2018 summer months, students will be housed in the Berkshire apartments with double and single apartment options. Accommodations are fully furnished apartments including an in-unit kitchen (including refrigerator), excluding in-unit laundry (located within the building), and includes all utilities (cable, internet, water, and electricity). 

Summer Housing Dates

  • The first day for summer move-in will be Sunday, May 13.
  • Students who live on campus for the spring term will remain in their spring assignment from May 9-13 (unless notified otherwise) and move from their spring to summer assignment on Sunday, May 13.
  • Students who have on-campus housing in the fall may stay in their summer housing until Sunday, August 12 and will move to their fall housing assignment on August 12.
  • Students who do not have on-campus or AU affiliated housing in the fall may stay until August 12.
  • Students are required to stay a minimum of three (3) consecutive weeks for the summer.

The information above reflects recommended stays based on the start and end day for class sessions allowing for days before and after the class term. Students will be charged according to their requested check-in and check-out dates.

Students also have the option of selecting a date range as long as requirement of a minimum consecutive three (3) week stay is met:

  • Daily per person rate for a double 1 bedroom apartment: $46 per day
  • Daily per person rate for a single studio apartment: $56 per day
    • option can be submitted within the housing application, but will only be offered if space allows
    • the second set of furniture from the academic year must remain in the apartment

Summer Housing Policies

Application Directions

Log into your AU Housing Portal and select the application for "Summer Student 2018." The application opens on Monday, April 9. There is no deadline to apply, but students are asked to apply at least 3 business days prior to requested move-in. Make sure to review the 2018 Summer Housing & Residence Life License Agreement, available on our website and in the application. Student questions about the agreement should reach out to us at housing@american.edu.

Cancellation Policies

To cancel summer housing:

  • If you have not received a housing assignment: cancel the application itself within the AU Housing Portal. Within the Summer 2018 application, select the "Cancel" option within the upper menu bar. You can view the confirmation of the cancelled application within the portal.
  • If you have received a housing assignment: submit the Housing Cancellation and Termination Request Form found within the AU Housing Portal. Once logged into the portal, select the option from the top menu bar and submit the request form. You will receive a confirmation once the assignment has been cancelled.
Cancellation requests via telephone will not be honored.

Cancellation Fees

Fees for summer housing cancellations differ depending on time before check-in date.

  • Prior to receiving a room assignment: Cancellations received no less than 14 days prior to the requested check-in date will receive a $200 cancellation fee assessed onto your student account.
  • After receiving a room assignment, but before check-in: Your application will be cancelled, your assignment, the charges for the room will be removed and replaced with the $200 cancellation fee on your student account.
  • After check-in: You are responsible for full payment of the requested length of stay as indicated on the application and/or any approved extension exceptions.

Check-In and Check-Out Procedures

Students may check in at the front desk of Nebraska Hall at 3 p.m. or later on their scheduled arrival date. Checkout time will be 12 p.m. (noon) on your scheduled departure date at the front desk of Nebraska Hall. Please plan accordingly as other students may be scheduled to move into your assigned room at 3 p.m. on your check-out day. If you need housing past 12 p.m., request your check-out date as the following day on your application.

Changing Your Check-In or Check-Out Dates

Requested changes to stays will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be submitted from your AU email address to housing@american.edu. Please include your name, AU ID number, scheduled dates, and requested date changes. Requests to change check-in date must be received no less than fourteen (14) days prior to your original scheduled check-in. Requests to change your check-out date must be received no less than seven (7) days prior to your original scheduled checkout. 

Dining and Retail

Meal Plans

  • 50 Block Meal Plan with $225 in EagleBucks: $820.00
  • 25 Block Meal Plan with $225 in EagleBucks: $540.00
  • 25 Block Meal Plan with $100 in EagleBucks: $410.00

Non-current AU students are not able to register for meal plans but may utilize the EagleBucks option. 

Meal Plan Enrollment

Students will be able to request a meal plan within their summer housing application or by contacting One Card and Dining Services. All meal plan questions can be directed at the One Card and Dining Services office through mealplans@american.edu.

Cancellation Policy

Students may seek to cancel or change their summer meal plan seven (7) business days from their date of check-in to the residence halls. In order to make this request, written communication must be sent to mealplans@american.edu from the student's university email address. Students will be charged for any used meals or EagleBucks. After the end of the change/cancellation period, students may not cancel or change their meal plans. Students who withdraw from the summer session seven (7) business days from their date of check-in will be charged the full amount.

Students may check in at the Nebraska Hall front desk beginning at 3 p.m. on their assigned check-in date.

The entire American University campus is utilized for summer conference operations from May through August. All AU students are assigned to one building. If your current room assignment is in the summer building, we will do our best to allow you to remain in your academic year room assignment.

No. Alcohol is still not permitted in any American University residence hall, regardless of whether or not the resident is 21. American University students will go through the same process with Student Conduct if they are caught consuming or being knowingly and willingly in the presence of alcohol in the residence halls.

Additionally, due to the hazards associated with their use, the following appliances may not be present in residence hall rooms:

  • Personal air conditioners
  • Grills (including George Foreman grills)
  • Halogen lamps
  • Immersion coals
  • Oil, kerosene, and gas lamps
  • Open-coil appliances
  • Steam vaporizers
  • Waterbeds
  • Microwaves
  • Any appliance attached to multiple extension cords
These appliances may only be used in designated cooking areas or kitchens:

  • Coffee makers
  • Electrical appliances with heating elements
  • Hot pots
  • Popcorn poppers
  • Rice cookers
  • Toasters and toaster ovens


Your safety is important, and these rules are made with this in mind.

Yes, we house our American University students together over the summer. In order to be placed with someone you know, BOTH students must make the request in writing (either on the application or in an email to housing@american.edu). If both students request one another, we do our best to meet those requests. Requests that are not mutual will not be honored.

Yes, summer meals plans are available. You can inquire about purchases a meal plan before or once you have arrived on campus directly through the mealplans@american.edu account. EagleBucks balances associated with previous terms will also remain active over the summer on your AU One Card.

The residence halls reopen for returning students registered for fall 2018 housing on August 22, 2018.

Students staying on campus through August 12, 2018 and have confirmed fall housing through American University will be able to transition directly into their fall assignment on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Students DO NOT NEED to complete an early arrival form to take advantage of this early transition.

Housing & Residence Life staff will contact all students living in summer housing to make arrangements for the transition from their summer assignment to their academic year room.

Students must be available to move to their academic year assignment on Sunday, August 12, 2018 between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Students must pay for their stay (summer housing) through August 12, 2018 in order to stay on campus between the summer and fall terms.

Storage will not be available for students who are unable to move on August 12. All summer belongings must be removed from their summer assignment by 5 p.m. that day.

All American University students living in AU Summer Housing but moving off campus for the Fall 2018 semester must check-out by 12 p.m. (noon) on August 12, 2018.

Current students should visit their AU Housing Portal to submit their application. The application will be available beginning at 12 p.m. on Monday April 9, 2018.

Mail Services will continue during the summer months. You will recieve a mail box key upon check in and package pick up will be located at the Berkshire building. Detailed information on summer mail services will be available when your housing assignment is confirmed. Mail should be addressed:
