You are here: American University Information Technology IT Security & Privacy Improvements to Duo Multifactor Authentication

Dear AU Community,

The Office of Information Technology is pleased to share that Windows Hello and Apple Touch ID are now integrated with Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA). By combining the convenience of biometric authentication with the security of Duo MFA, we've simplified the way you access your AU account.

Easier Authentication

You can now enroll your Touch ID (for Macs), and Windows Hello (for Windows computers) as authentication methods in Duo. With Windows Hello and Touch ID, authentication is as simple as a touch or a glance. Just use your fingerprint or facial recognition to verify your identity and gain access instantly. These alternate authentication methods can improve the authentication experience when you access AU systems from multiple locations or devices.

If you have not already set up the Duo Mobile app, we highly recommend that too. Duo Mobile has traditionally offered one of the simplest and most flexible methods for authenticating to your AU account by providing users a one-tap prompt or renewable security codes. Duo Mobile set up is easy and ideal for situations where you may not have cell or Wi-Fi access, including international travel.

Backup Codes and DUO Travel Guide

OIT has also added a new option that allows you to generate a set of backup codes to access your account when you anticipate being unable to use standard options. These backup codes are also an effective workaround if you need to enroll a new device in DUO without having access to your original device.

If you are planning to travel internationally, we recommend you view the Duo Travel Guide for unique considerations around international travel including country-specific information.
