Safeguarding the University's assets and fostering its capacity to serve others
Since its founding in 1893, American University has benefited greatly from the devotion, service, intellectual contributions, ethical behavior, and philanthropy of many thousands of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends.
In a very real sense, they also are "trustees" of the institutions by virtue of their dedication, affection, and generosity that help to ensure that the University will faithfully serve this and future generations. Those of us who have been chosen to serve as fiduciary trustees for a period of time—to safeguard the University's assets and to foster its capacity to serve others—enthusiastically and without reservation accept the following additional responsibilities as evidence of the commitment of each trustee. Community Message from BOT Chair Charlie Lydecker
Following President Alger's message that he has accepted a joint appointment with the American Council on Education and American Association of Colleges and Universities to become the first America 250 Fellow, Board Chair Lydecker sent a campus message thanking President Alger for his contributions and announcing the selection of David Marchick, dean of the Kogod School of Business, to serve as interim president, effective July 1. Trustees Jack Cassell and Alan Meltzer inducted into Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame
The 2026 class of the Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame, incducted Saturday, January 31, includes four individuals whose contributions to AU Athletics span generations—as student-athletes, supporters, and champions of the department's growth. Inductees include Jack Cassell, BOT Chair Emeritus and former men's soccer student-athlete, and Alan Meltzer, Trustee and former wrestler. Read more.
Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance Opens
The Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance (CAP) and the attached Sports Center Annex (SCAN) were completed in January 2026. The facilities offer new spaces for student-athletes and the entire AU community to thrive. Trustee Alan Meltzer is a former wrestler and passionate supporter of the student-athlete experience.
