AU's School of Communication inspires leaders through excellence in teaching, research, creativity and unique real-world opportunities.
SOC Commencement Featured Speaker: Michael Kempner
Michael Kempner, American University alumnus and Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MWWPR, one of the nation's largest independent public relations firms, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and served as featured speaker at the School of Communication Spring 2018 commencement. Kempner is working to make the PR industry more inclusive, partnering with SOC on a fellowship program designed to build a pipeline of diverse talent through the design of a hands-on, agency-based learning environment that will encourage more young professionals, particularly people of color, to consider public relations as a career choice. He also serves on the SOC Dean's Advisory Council.
Nesima Aberra, SOC/MA '17
There are a lot more opportunities out there to create something that matters.
Nesima Aberra loves storytelling, but believes we need to expand where and how stories are told and who tells them. At AU, she explored how media shapes the way we understand our world through innovative, thoughtful, and relevant stories. Through her Dean's Internship at VOX, she's learned how to find compelling human interest angles in more complex news events. Now she's more excited than ever to use literary journalism to change the way people think and feel and help make our society more informed and empowered.
