Employer & Supervisor Frequently Asked Questions

Employers do not access the money. Students apply with the unpaid, or underfunded (less than $1000) internship offer and if the student meets eligibility requirements, you as the employer will be asked to verify the unpaid internship before the student payment can be processed.

We invite recruiting employers to post all internship opportunities in Handshake, and we continue to strongly encourage organizations to compensate interns for their work

We encourage employers to post a semester, or about 3-4 months, in advance of their internship start date. Students will search and review internships the semester before they are planning to start. So, for fall internships, you would post your position in Handshake in June or July; for spring internships, around October; and for summer internships, in February or March.

We understand that this timing is not always possible, and some organizations will post for longer and shorter periods of time. On average, this is the best timing for broadest exposure to your posting.

  1. When students complete their Internship Pledge application, they will be required to share an offer letter so they can demonstrate they have secured an internship. In addition, they will be required to provide their internship supervisor's name and email address.
  2. Handshake will then email a form directly to the student's internship supervisor to complete. It is important the internship supervisor checks their email inbox and spam box for the incoming emailed form and complete the form promptly. Once you respond and confirm via the link, we can begin the review of the student application for funding.
  3. At the conclusion of the internship, we will send you a short survey to gather information about the student’s performance. This survey is five questions and will take 2 minutes to complete. This information is extremely helpful and we thank you in advance for submitting it at the end of the experience.

Yes, we can send a screenshot of the information the student submitted. We would then ask you to review what they sent and confirm or deny the accuracy of what the student submitted so we can manually approve on our end.

Not yet. We are reviewing the feasibility of converting some on-campus positions to internships in the future. We will share more information about this initiative when it becomes available.

  • Eligible internships include unpaid or underpaid internships that have been offered and accepted by the student and for which all required documentation has been submitted. (Underpaid is defined as $1,000 and under for an 8-week, 100 hour internship.)

  • They have completed an approved career readiness course at AU (UGST-100, UGST-200, UGST-020, KSB-101, KSB-302, KSB-112), or UGST-120 (typically offered in the spring semester).
